Frequently Asked Questions for Care Workers from Abroad

How do I apply for work?
Initially simply submit the Care Worker Enquiry Form and we will get in touch with you.
Please note if you apply to register with us from abroad and we have a recruitment agent based in your country, we may pass on your details to them if we think they can process your application faster. Once your application is complete they will return you to us at Cooksbridge, where you will be registered on the same basis as other applicants.
Can I work in the UK?
You are able to work in the UK if you have a UK or EU passport. If you have a grandparent born in the British Isles you can apply for an ancestry visa allowing you to work in UK.
You are able to work if you have 'Right of Abode', 'Indefinite Leave', or have been granted asylum.
We regret we are unable to offer work to holders of student visas.
We are unable to help with applications for work permits.
“ I wanted to experience life in England as this is where my ancestors hail from.... Being able to help elderly people to stay in their own homes and therefore feel secure in a familiar environment is a very rewarding experience. ”   Care Worker from South Africa
Do I need to have a police check?
You need to apply in your own country for a police check. When you arrive in the UK we are legally obliged to apply for a police check for you here.
Where will I live when I am on my time off?
You have to arrange somewhere to stay when you are not working. We have several Links for Care Workers that can advise on local accommodation, as well as providing other information you will find useful. We are sometimes able to arrange subsidised temporary accommodation, but this cannot be guaranteed. Please ask about this at time of application.
Do I need a UK bank account?
Yes. You will need a UK bank account to receive your wages.
It makes things easier if you can set up a UK bank account before you leave home. Your own bank at home may be able to help.
Some UK banks now offer bank accounts designed specifically for people coming from overseas to work in the UK, so we hope you will not find this difficult. You may need a correspondence address in the UK and identification documents.
You may find the services for overseas travellers offered by 1st Contact of interest.
